In its most basic form, an animatic is a series of storyboards displayed in a sequence that usually contains a soundtrack comprised of rough dialogue, temporary music and sound effects.

This process allows the director and animators to work out timings and make necessary artistic adjustments to create a "blueprint" that will put everyone on the same page when production starts on a visual effect sequence.
